The Session: What is It?

The Session is the governing council of a Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) congregation. One of four (Session, Presbytery, Synod, General Assembly), it is the council closest to the daily life of the church.

Made up of the pastor(s) and ruling elders elected by the congregation, the Session exists to prayerfully discern God’s will, guide the spiritual life of the church and lead the congregation in faithful participation in Christ’s mission.

Rooted in Scripture and governed by the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the Session is entrusted with both spiritual oversight and practical governance, always for the purpose of serving Christ, building up the church, and loving the world God loves.
